The record
Eleven thousand years old, older than farming or writing, built by hunter-gatherers who by every textbook rule should not have been able to build it. And then, deliberately, buried. No one agrees on why.

A tide-locked island cairn where a single, unrepeatable response in dense carved stone nearly breaks Priya's model, until Evelyn realises difference is the design.
The record
Reachable only by boat. The most densely engraved megalithic passage in Europe, every slab carved edge to edge with arcs and concentric motifs. And the capstone above turns out to be a fragment of a monument broken 4 kilometres away. Nobody has explained why.

The tone that stayed. Evelyn stands where the solstice light enters and understands the builders were not decorating.
The record
Older than the pyramids. At winter solstice dawn, a purpose-built roof-box admits light that travels nineteen metres to illuminate the chamber floor for exactly seventeen minutes. The entrance stone carries a triple-spiral carved five thousand years before anyone wrote down what it means.

In a chamber beyond the tourist routes, Michael and Evelyn find something placed where only someone following the pattern would look.
The record
The limestone karsts of Maros-Pangkep hold paintings that are, as of 2024, the oldest figurative art known to humanity: at least 51,200 years old. People were leaving messages on these walls a thousand generations before writing was invented.

A hill the story treats with the reverence it has gathered for a thousand years, the Avalon of legend, where the threads of the journey draw together.
The record
A natural hill reshaped by centuries of terracing, crowned by a roofless medieval tower. Identified with Avalon since the Middle Ages. The archaeologists who dug here found a Dark Age metalworker's forge and imported Mediterranean amphorae. Something drew people to this particular hill for a very long time.

The last co-ordinate. The one that took the longest to reach.
The record
A bullseye of concentric rock forty kilometres across, visible from orbit, formed by the slow erosion of an uplifted geological dome. The proportions have made it the internet's favourite candidate for Atlantis. Geologists say dome. The circles refuse to look accidental.

In the novel
A chapel so dense with carved symbolism that, for five centuries, people have come here certain the stone is keeping a secret.
The record
Founded in 1446 and never finished. Around 213 carved cubes on the ceiling have led researchers to argue the patterns encode a musical score. It rose to fame after The Da Vinci Code. The chapel's real programme of carved symbolism is strange enough without the fiction.
